Prominent Global Business Chair Professor Dr. Chen Yuxin from NYUS Visited and Gave a Lecture

On Dec. 12th, 2013, prominent global business chair professor Dr. Chen Yuxin from New York University Shanghai visited our Business School and gave a lecture entitled “Tradeoffs Between Short and Long Contract Periods: The Impacts of Hyperbolic Discounting and Reference Duration” to teachers and doctoral students at Department of Marketing. Dr. Chen was previous full professor at Northwestern University Kellogg School of Management.

Dr. Chen graduated from Washington University in St Louis and taught at New York University Stern School of Business for ten years. After that, he became chair professor of Polk Brothers Retailing and tenured full professor of Marketing at Northwestern University Kellogg School of Management. In 2013, Dr. Chen joined New York University Shanghai as full-time professor. In addition, Dr. Chen Yuxin is distinguished professor at Peking University Guanghua School of Management and also visiting professor once at China Europe International Business School, Cheung Kong Graduate School, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, National University of Singapore and other universities.

Prof. Chen Yuxin’s field of study mainly involves data driven marketing, Internet marketing, competitive strategy, retailing, pricing, advertising, empirical model, Bayesian econometrics, behavioral economics, etc. Prof. Chen published approximately 30 academic papers on top international academic journals such as Journal of Marketing Research, Marketing Science, Management Science and Quantitative Marketing and Economics. He also works as associate editor at these four journals. Dr. Chen’s awards include INFORMS 2001 John D.C. Little Marketing Science, Management Science Best Marketing Paper and 2012 Journal of Marketing Research Paul E Green Best Marketing Paper, etc.

In the lecture, Prof. Chen Yuxin explained consumer choice on long-term or short-term contracts in the field of service through modeling. Although modeling needs deep knowledge of the mathematics, Prof. Chen explained the profound theories in simple language, helping the audience understand how to expand creative thinking and thus contribute to human knowledge and comprehend the fun and challenge in it.
