Invited by Accounting Department of Business School, Professor Xiumin Martin from Saint Louis University in Washington gave an academic lecture in the afternoon on December 5, 2013 in room 426, Ningyuan building. Faculty members, PhD students, graduate and undergraduate students of accounting department attended the lecture.

Professor Xiumin Martin is with the Accounting Department of Saint Louis University in Washington. She has long committed to the study of Corporate reporting and Contract theory. She has a lot of academic achievements, and has published many papers on top tier international journals in finance and accounting, such as Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Journal of Financial Economics, etc.

Professor Xiumin Martin reported her recent paper ”Do Financial Market Development Influence Accounting Practices? Credit Default Swaps and Borrowers’ Reporting Conservation” this time. This paper mainly concerns the impact of capital market development on the financial reports. Professor Xiumin Martin pointed out in this paper that the use of financial instruments, especially credit default swaps, will reduce the conservatism of company financial reporting. At the same time, financial reporting will tend to be more aggressive, when the market is more concerned about the credit, and when the debt holders are more likely to perform swaps, which further validates the hypothesis in her article.
