Good news: project performance evaluation of the National Natural Science Foundation of China led by Professor Deqiu Chen was awarded "Super Excellent"

Recently, the Management Science Department of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) released the results of project performance evaluation. The NSFC General Project "Family Heterogeneity, Institutional Gap and Enterprise Innovation" (No.: 71572035) led by Professor Deqiu Chen, Dean of UIBEBS, was awarded as "Super excellent".

Based on the institutional gap characteristics of China's transition economy and taking family heterogeneity and firm innovation behavior as the research object, this project aims to explore the construction of a theoretical framework of the impact of family heterogeneity on firm innovation behavior. On the basis of this, the paper explains the macro innovative national strategic needs and the intergenerational inheritance of micro family enterprises that cause many governance problems. The project promotes the research on strategic innovation from the macro level to the micro enterprise level, and provides the micro determinants of China's economic growth. It has important theoretical and practical significance for understanding the innovation behavior of Chinese enterprises and the efficiency of China's economic growth at the present stage. Based on the practice of constructing innovative country needs, from the theory, the discussion and analysis of the innovative behavior of family enterprises is helpful to enhance the understanding of building an innovative country from the micro perspective; from the practice, deepen the understanding of the micro-basis of intergenerational inheritance and national strategic innovation of family enterprises, respond to institutional transformation and public policy supply, provide ideas for enterprises to adapt to the institutional environment and choose reasonable strategies, guide how to promote the construction of an innovative country, and provide policy suggestions for regulators.

Since the project was approved in 2015, the research team led by Professor Chen has been deeply engaged in the research of enterprise innovation, family governance and institutional ecology under the background of Chinese characteristics. The expected research plan has been successfully completed with high standards and strict requirements, and a series of landmark high-quality research results have been achieved: Chen has published more than 20 academic papers and 1 monograph in Journal of Financial Economics, Management Science, Economic Research, Management World and other authoritative journals at home and abroad. Related achievements have won the 14th, 15th and 16th Beijing Philosophy and Social Science Outstanding Achievement Award second prize.

It is reported that the Management Science Department of NSFC has carried out the performance evaluation of concluding projects for 23 consecutive years, and combined the evaluation results with the follow-up funding work to encourage scientists to carry out high-level and responsible scientific research. The Ministry of Management Science reviewed more than 1,400 finalised projects in 2021, and only 4.8% of them were awarded "Super Excellent". The National Natural Science Foundation of China will combine the evaluation results with the follow-up funding work, and grant a continuous funding to the " Super Excellent" project hosts who apply for a project in the same direction. Priority will also be given to international cooperation applications for its ongoing research projects.
