The fourth lecture of the UIBEBS 40th Anniversary High-end Forum - Feature extraction method and its application in economic management

On October 31st, 2022, the fourth lecture of the UIBEBS 40th Anniversary High-end Forum - Feature extraction method and its application in economic management was successfully held in Room 202 of Keyan building. Professor Shouyang Wang, who is the professor of Economics and Management School of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, director of the Research Center for Forecasting Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and dean of Entrepreneurship and Management School of Shanghai University of Science and Technology, was specially invited to be the lecturer. Professor Deqiu Chen, dean of the School, presided over the forum. Professor Tiedong Wang, party secretary of the School attended and addressed the meeting. More than 2,000 faculty members, students and people from all walks of life participated in the forum online and offline.

The lecture focused on "Feature extraction method and its application in economic management ". Professor Wang first pointed out the challenges of traditional statistical methods in predicting and analyzing a large number of nonlinear and non-stationary data in reality, and stressed that feature extraction method, namely empirical modal analysis, provides useful guidance for the study of these complex economic system problems. Professor Wang then introduced that the method has been widely used in engineering fields such as space exploration, oil exploration, earthquake prediction and bridge construction, and explained the core idea of the data processing method in detail by taking oil price prediction as an example. Then, by combining the event analysis method, Professor Wang showed the concrete application process of this method in economic management, and suggested that we learn more complex data processing methods to study more complex and brand new economic problems. Finally, at the end of the report, Professor Wang advocated that young students should make more efforts in the topic selection, devote themselves to research, be pioneer to challenge "common sense" or "impossible", dare to be the first, and he firmly believe that young Chinese students are able to do world-class research work.

In the end, Dean Chen made a summary of the report, affirming Professor Wang's outstanding contributions in the talent cultivation once again, calling on scientific researchers, faculty and students to learn from Professor Wang, to put more time and energy into scientific research, to be not afraid of trouble and difficulties, and to achieve truly meaningful scientific research results.
